Tunnbrödsrulle (Swedish Hotdogs)

Silvia

After making lomper I of course had to buy a package of hotdogs to have some traditional Norwegian hotdogs in lomper. And then while I was in the supermarket I spotted some shrimp and thought I could maybe whip up some Skagenröra to add to the hotdogs. And then once I was thinking of Skagenröra I thought about Swedish tunnbrödsrulle, also often referred to simply as Swedish hotdogs.

Tunnbrödsrulle are a popular Swedish street food made of a tunnbröd, or flatbread, topped with a layer of mashed potatoes, two hotdogs, Skagenröra (shrimp salad), fried onions, ketchup and mustard.

But of course living in Norway I have to give tunnbrödsrulle a Norwegian twist and make them with lomper (potato flatbread) instead of wheat flatbread. Historically Norway and Sweden have often clashed, but in this particular case Sweden and Norway come together to make the best hotdog dish you’ll ever try.

Tunnbröd and lomper

Tunnbrödsrulle in Swedish actually translates to “thin bread roll.” Tunnbröd (tynnbrød in Norwegian) is a thin wheat tortilla or flatbread, so tunnbrödsrulle can mean any type of sandwich roll made with tunnbröd. However these particular hotdogs with mashed potatoes, Skagenröra, and fried onions rolled in tunnbröd have become such a popular street food in Sweden (and Norway and Finland) that now this is what tunnbrödsrulle usually refers to.

Traditionally tunnbrödsrulle, or Swedish hotdogs, are made with wheat flatbread, however I think they taste even better with lomper, or potato flatbread!

cooking lomper

You can make lomper from scratch with my lomper recipe here. Cook up a few more potatoes with the lomper potatoes and set them aside for the mashed potatoes for the Swedish hotdogs.

If you don’t want to make lomper you can use any type of wrap or tortilla.

Mashed potatoes

You can make your own mashed potatoes by boiling a few potatoes and mashing with some milk, butter, and salt. Or if you want to save time you can use instant mashed potatoes instead (Norwegians are actually huge fans of instant mash, so you can feel very Scandinavian when whipping them up).

Swedish hotdogs

Don’t worry if you can’t find a Swedish hotdog brand – use whatever type of hotdogs you like. You can cook them in hot water, grill or fry them, or even just microwave them.

A tunnbrödsrulle will have two hotdogs, but you can make it a “half” and only use one hotdog.

Skagenröra

Skagenröra is a creamy shrimp salad and it might be the most controversial part of the tunnbrödsrulle, but I’d venture to say it’s also the most crucial ingredient here. You could make tunnbrödsrulle without Skagenröra, but would it still be a proper Swedish hotdog? Actually I have seen Swedish hotdogs sometimes served with sweet pickle relish instead of Skagenröra, so that’s an option if you’re not a fan of seafood.

You can make your own Skagenröra with my Skagenröra recipe here.

Fried onions

After ketchup and mustard, fried onions are the most common hotdog topping in Scandinavia. Here you can buy bags of friend onions at the supermarket, but if you don’t have access to them it’s easy to make your own.

Slice an onion into thin slices and fry in butter on low heat for about 15 minutes.
